My dads property has several overgrown apple trees. I know that they are in need of severe pruning, and that is on the immediate agenda, but I am looking for other suggestions. We talked about building small brush piles under the tree, as the ones that are naturally there seem to keep the deer coming back regularly to root for apples. Hopefully this will keep the deer from cleaning them out every feeding. Another Idea I had was planting hosta plants all around underneath them, as they are shade tolerant, highly preferred by deer, and will come back heavy even after being browsed heavy. any advice for or against these ideas?

Sounds like a great idea. Make sure you let sun into those apple trees to help them produce more!
