I had 40 chestnut trees in the garden I was going to plant this spring well my protective fence had a hole and a rabbit found my trees he got to 10 of them before I saw what was going on. My question is if 1 rabbit can chew down 10 trees after crawling under a fenced why are we laying the so called lack of regeneration on just deer. What about other factors

If you think rabbits kill a lot of seedlings ,just imagine how many are killed by mice and voles. Rabbits are few and far between in many areas , but mice and voles are everywhere. One study I read showed meadow voles effectively prevented an abandoned farm field from reverting to forest land.

The adverse effects of all rodents on tree seedlings and saplings is well documented. Why do you think all nurseries that plant fruit trees protect the trunks with a protective barrier?
