I understand that most of your clover type crops can best be planted anytime now best to spread it on cold frosty mornings and as the ground thaws and cracks it readily accepts the clover well. Getting ready to start alot of planting at our beagle club

Just be carefull as to the date of seed you buy the older the seed is the lesser the chance of growth percentage. Look for the fresh stuff and try agways and feed stores. most will sell it in small quantities if needed and will custom blend it as well

plan on trying sugar beets and chinese chestnuts. never liked the idea of planting food for deer, to me it seemed like baiting but after the last two years of poor hunting i plan on changing that

Lets here about the early season food plots that have worked for you? Like I talked about in another thread....go to antlerking.com and look up their trophy clover mix....that stuff is awesome. I wouldn't recommend buying from walmart....most of the seed there is old and good for nothing...I'm not saying you won't get seed that works from wal-mart, but your better off buying from a company that specalizes in seed.......much better off.

Well, I just tilled over the soil for my food plot. Bobcat with the tiller attachement goes though anything. I'm planting imperial clover. The cheapest I found was the 25 pound bag at the sportsmansguide.com. ( www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=369188 ) I just put down pelletized lime and a 0-26-26 fertilizer. Clover produces it's own nitrogen so I don't want to feed the weeds nitrogen. I don't have a cultivator, so I bought a lawn roller from Sears. $119 steel roller on sale. reg $150. I have the lime and fertilizer down and tonight it's time to compact the seed bed and I'm planting this weekend and then rolling it again. Then I will spray arrest herbicide in a couple weeks. ( www.whitetailinstitute.com/products/herbicides/ ) Moultrie seems to have the best sprayers for the buck too. ( www.moultriefeeders.com/catalog.aspx?catid=sprayers ) I will let you know how it turns out, I did a lot of research and I think this is the best way to go for a foot plot to keep deer and grow quality antlers. Hope this helps some people out.
