Guys, my son is looking to start Coyote hunting and is curious as to what caliber to get. His shots will be anywhere from 50-150 yds. Right now he is thinking of doing most of his hunting at night and may be in a slightly populated area. So he's looking for something that won't have a loud report and won't do too much damage to the pelt or skull being he'll be shooting at the eyes from reflecting back from the light.
So what do you think would fit the bill 22 Mag, or ?

IMO the 22 mag is a little lite for yotes.
I use the Ruger M77 MkII 22-250 Rem for my yote hunting. Pelt damage has been very minimal, most times I just get a 22 cal sized entrance hole that has to be sewed up.
If your worried about being close to population I would suggest a 12 ga with 00 buck shot. I have used it on yotes a few times and the holes are easy enough to sew up.
As for head shots I try to stay away from them. Low percentage shot at most even at night. I usually go for the wheel house. Most times with a yote you won't get their eyes as they tend to look sideways at it. My lights are usually bright enough to lite em up for a clean lung shot out to 250 yds.
For calling them I would stay away from the electronic callers, and use the mouth callers. I have found that yotes seem to be able to tell the difference between the two. good luck

Whitetail101, thanks for the info. What about the report? I don't know how the report of the 222Rem, or 223 is, do ya think there's much difference in the report of the 22-250? As you can tell I don't have any experience with these varmint cartridges.

Of the 3, the 223 has the quitest report. My 22-250 barks pretty loud as I have my handloads loaded quite hot(34.0 grains IMR3031 - 0.1 grain under max). The 222 Rem has a report about somewhere in the middle between the 223 and the 22-250.
All three cals ; however, are going to let the neighborhood know you just shot a yote. It is for this reason that I used the 12 ga with 00 buck when hunting near housing at night, and limited my shots to 50 yds or less.
From my experience in yote hunting I don't think you'll have a problem with using any of the centerfire 22 cal rifles for yote hunting, as most times you only get one shot in a given area each night.
good luck
if you have any further questions just give me a call at 724-463-3664 and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

get a 22 Hornet, bang'em in the eye and don't look back... #4 buckshot is the largest shot allowed by the PGC for fur...

Hi Ed. I had a 22-250 & had a pretty loud crack compared to a 222. I would opt for a 222 myself which would have enuff to get the job done past the 100 yard line.
I was gonna suggest ur .451 White but thats a little on the lite side! ;D

ED my opinion only,go with the 222 or 223,cheap to shoot, not real loud , no recoil, and most are accurate at 200 to 300 yds with enough power for coyotes and woodchucks.
