Howdy! I am a new member on this site and really enjoying all the information that yenz share. I just recently started hunting yotes and am doing my homework. I was wondering what are some of the most effective methods and times to hunt these tricky buggers. If anyone has any tips, I'd like to read them. Appreciate it.

best time to hunt is during the day after or during snow. call for about 30-45 seconds then wait 15-20 minutes before calling again. they will come in looking around for other yotes or a wounded animal. also you can lay meat or a roadkill out as bait. i have seen and heard of people hunting them at night as well i havnt tried it yet but i think i will eventually

Hey Spike:
Ok, I'll try that. I went out two weeks ago at early night time and had some responding, but too green to capitalize. Do you have a preference in calls and setups? Aside of forestry land, I have access to strip lands with pine fields. I appreciate the tips!

I don't hunt them, but saw numerous tracks today in Warren area, quite a few fox tracks also, but yote tracks everywhere, never saw that many in all the years I've hunted.

yea zodiak i have noticed a large boom in coyotes as well. i belive this may be part of the reason why alot of people might not be seeing deer. im doing my share to get rid of them tho :-) Actually I saw tons of deer sign & quite a few deer there also(tried to get pics of tore-up hillsides & trails but to cold, camera wouldn't work.. ), has had good numbers there the several years I've been hunting the area. We went out for small game & couldn't run the dogs today(6" snow with thick crust, would have tore up their feet) so just went walking & following tracks looking for snowshoes/grouse. I noticed the yotes were tracking the hares & turkey, there aren't high turkey numbers here, I know that(only saw 4 turkey tracks in miles of walking today). Seemed the fox were tracking hares & grouse. The grouse here are also unusually jumpy & hard to get near or points on them & I have some very good grouse dogs........I'd say the fox/yote numbers definitely have something to do with this. Perhaps affecting the turkey numbers as well?? A good amount of acorns & beech nuts plus good nesting areas. I literally saw more deer sign than all others combined(well, except squirrel) , then hare, yote, grouse, fox. Least was turkey.

That makes sense there Spike, at least I was in the right for open areas ;)I've been hunting the more-open strips. I'll look into the call, appreciate that!
Yeah zodiakgsps, same experience in my areas that I hunt as far as grouse with high yote pop. I'd like to fix that myself.
Hey richg, if you get one of those road runners, run him my way. I need the extra help. ;D ;D

I've been thinking of doing some pred hunting here myself, my favorite grouse spot. Think the fox are more a problem to them than the yotes though.....the combination in high numbers is definitely not good though. Joe & his brother are going ML there, maybe they'll knock a few down!

I guess it all depends. I know my neck of the woods definitely has it's share of yotes vs foxes. I agree, any of those buggers can do some damage. I'd like to peg down the yotes around my area, only problem is they are getting the best of me . That's why I'm all eyes on these posts. Hope it all works out there for ya.
