Id like to quote Ron Spomer if I may---Page 27--- Issue Date 11-23-07 "Flintlocks also are difficult to ignite because the fine priming powder is held in a pan beside the flash hole that leads into the barrel. You expose your primer when you cock the flint hammer. Sparks fly when the flint strikes the steel, the primer ignites, burns down the the flash hole, and in turn ignites the main powder charge. There is a considerable time lag, adding additional challenge. Flintlocks are not easy in the best of conditions, sometimes downright recalcitrant in damp and cold."
First many of us including most people of long ago never use the 4 F (FINE POWDER) Second --the primer is not exposed because of the frizzen seated over top of the priming pan. Third----Id love for him to just try and measure the lag time of Elisabeth. I think this guy needs to visit the range with several of us to show him what a real flintlock gun can do!!! YOU THOUGHTS-----------

I agree, Dickert. This fellow must have a very limited understanding of what a well tuned flintlock looks like and sounds like, and if he exposes his priming powder each time he cocks his hammer to full cock, his chances of getting ANY sparks are slim and NONE!

maybe all he knows is an inline, but then why is he talking flintlocks then....my T/C flintlock is as fast as any caplock around to where side by side i can't tell the difference ....i bet my chambers lock on my lancaster is even faster yet............bob P.S....as a matter of fact i was the only one on the side of the mountain in N.Y. one year opening day of rifle deer season out of 16 guys over bout 300 acres and was the ONLY one with a flintlock out of all them centerfire rifles in the rain that day whom got a deer ;D ....

Well senior', I have been preaching that over at huntingpa forums for a few years. Slowly winning converts. As you and Loggy are now very aware, a well tuned flinter goes off as fast as a cartridge gun. Some of the experts are x spurts " x" is a has been and a "spurt" is a little drip.
That the publications have prmitted this false premise to be perpetuated surprises me as well. Toby Bridges and his ilk keep peddling the false story that PRBs are unfit for humane hunting. Sure, as long as Bullet companies and in-line makers are paying for their podiums and influencing their spew.
I recently had the occasion to teach a green horm how to load and shoot a flinter. I first showed him how to load and fire his CVA Mountain Rifle. but the flinch was still bad. Then I brought out my North Star trade gun and we loaded that and he shot it. No delay, no shhhhhhhhh, just boom. We pulled that arse backward allen wrench touch hole liner, drilled and tapped proper liner into it and his gun was going off like a champ. No more delays.
Seeing stuff like that makes me want to scream. Worse,,, when idiots keep spewing pablum, eventually those in the position of decision making, (like the PGC) start to believe it. Hence a season for in-lines and the pressure to open the late season to in-lines.

Zimmer, you are dead-on correct. The bottom line here is money. Bridges spews his current position, which is based on where his present financial backing evolves. If the powers-that-be(PGC), buy into his(Bridges) biased position, then we have a serious problem holding on to our one-of-a-kind, Flintlocks Only Season!
We, (the dwindling, older than dirt, flintlock group) have a serious problem in keeping this last-in-America season un-changed.
None of us should ever enter the post-Christmas season with any sense of shooting beyond the kill range of our primitive weapons. We anticipate our hunts with the sense that we Pennsylvania flintlock hunters are special in that we are re-creating the hunts of those longhunters who tramped these hills and hollows in centuries past.
This special season must never be considered as a "herd reduction" tool. Give the bow hunters an extra week, add crossbows, extent the early muzzleloader season a couple of days, issue more doe tags, but STOP TWEEKING the post Christmas season for flintlock folks. Patched round balls were fine! Open iron sights were fine! Conicals and peep sights have been added, now tweek someone elses season!

Dickert, my friend, I will dress traditional for our after Christmas get-together! You pushed this hunt, and it was a blast and I agree to dress accordingly for this year's hunt. But, I won't wear moccasins! I couldn't keep up with TPlank if I had an ATV!
Walking on dry leaves with slick bottomed moccasins is something old farts shouldn't do and keep their bones intact. I'll wear my Cabela's Outfitters under my wool pants.
I look forward to hunting with you.

Bob---I remember---Thanks again for the 'leg' work. I think we are building a core group of flinters who have the ability and means to make flintlocks more popular than ever....Its my hope anyway!
