I'm so excited. No one bought my muzzleloader and I got all the stuff to finally shoot it and I got my muzzleloader stamp so I'm set. Only thing i didn't get was a flash pan thing to pour the powder in with. I bought a starter kit to get me going and it said it has everything but the powder but it didn't have the thing for the flash pan powder. I'm so excited but yet I'm kind of scared to shoot it since i never shot one or seen one shot. Looks like Christmas I'm gonna take a trip to the range to site it in.
I could just sprinkle the flash pan powder in the pan, right? If not anyone know what i could use.
Any last minute tips or tricks i should know?

You need a pan primer to enable a trickle of a few grains in the pan(pan not more then 1/3 full)
Personally, I wouldnt venture out this season xtrememxrider. Having never shot a flintlock nor even have seen someone use one...you need quite a bit of range time/learning to get ready. I am an experienced flintlocker & it took me 2-3 months with multiple range visits to have my PA Mountain Rifle to the point i was comfortable carrying it hunting.
Start gettin ready now for the 2008 Early ML Season!!
What flintlock do you have? We can start with helping you refine a load and go from there.

First, read & reread safety manual with gun. It will cover the basics to get you started. Also, there are tips etc here that are good to read through. Be great if you had someone that shot flinters go to the range first time with you.
Sounds like 295 grain powerbelts. I would start with 80 grains 2fg load & see how it groups. If powerbelts, i suggest removing plastic gas check sleeve off back & replace then spin a turn or 2. Some have had problems with them not dropping & couldnt hit the broad side of a barn.
The 4fg is for the pan & like i said...1/3 at most full.
Our Tips & Tricks Thread plus there are many others here that would be good for you to read.

Thanks loggy Ive been reading up on it for a year. I went out to the range today and shot it 8 times. Its not that scary after the first shot. I was able to hold a great pattern at 25 yds with all bullets touching. When i moved to 50 yds it spread apart a little with the bullets dropping some. I really dont care for the tru glow sights their to big and they covered the whole area where im shooting. I like little pin point sights so i could see. Just my opinion though. I measured my powder to 90 grains and loaded them in my speed loaders. I was a little worried at first but all is fine now. As i get extra money ill put more into buying different bullets and stuff to better myself. As of right now I dont feel comfortable shooting anything apast 50 yds but I feel very comfortable out to there. Well its a start to a new hobby
The bullets that im shooting so far are Powerbelt 295 grain hollow points. Im not a big fan of hollow points so next time I think ill try out a solid point type.
Does anyone know what bullet works best with this gun?
Thanks loggy on the plastic bullet tip. maybe thats what was happening at 50 yds
Im so excited

My question is this---you shot it 8 or so times with the holes touching---why would you even think of switching bullets??? Heck if anything Id buy more of them and try playing with the blackpowder load a bit. Like maybe 70 gr then 75 gr then 80 then 85 and 90 gr if you are using Goex blackpowder--------------

Also you can simply prime your pan with what ever holds your powder....this is what I now do----I use a horn to hold my blackpowder---I load my blackpowder and and ball first. Finally I prime my pan from my horn or from the flask holding my blackpowder---however I use 3F not 2F so I can use this powder for both. If you use the 2F you can always try it to see as well as your 4 F Good luck and simply have fun playing and seeing what works for you.

an empty deer lure bottle with a flip up spout will work for a flash pan thing until you can get a proper pan primer.just make sure you clean and dry it real good before you fill it.
