The woods I hunt dictates what's really practical. The longest distance I am likely to have a shot is 150 yards, so I'm sighted in at 100 yards with a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. I'm completely confident to 150 yards. I admire the heck out of those guys who can make those long shot, but they aren't for me.

I can shoot 300 yds if I need to But I would much rather the shot be closer

Most of my shots have been under 75 yds. If I'm using my 280Remington, I'd feel comfortable shooting deer up to 200 yds. The furthest has been about 150 yds. I've taken two bucks with my .451 White Ml's at 90 yds and one doe at 150 yds. I guess it all depends on how well you know your rifle and how much practice you do especially offhand or how you will be hunting.

You said it! the main thing is to know you limitations with the weapon at hand and know that weapons capabilities! Like the old saying goes! Fear a man with only one gun! Chance are he really know's how to use it!!!

I've been prepared to take shots to 400 yds when hunting out west, but the longest shot I ever took was 200 yd on a pronghorn. Longest shot at a mule deer has been 125 yards.

IF my Leica 1200 can get a read on it out to 1200 yards, it's dead...the 300 UMags and 240 Sierra Matchkings can be guided right to the shoulder...can't beat side hill to side hill..it truely is an amazing variation on hunting.

My comfort range depends on the moment.I used to do alot of non-competitive sillouette shooting up until last year and have killed deer offhand at over 200yards on a few different occassions.I've also had deer in my scope at under 100 yards on several occassions and didn't shoot because I didn't feel steady enough.I never hunt near fields anymore so I rarely get a shot over 100 yards. With a solid rest,I wouldn't hesitate to take a 400 yards shot as long as the deer ws standing broadside and in the open.
