Just wondering what everyone feels is their comfort range when shooting, 100, 200, 300 yards or more. Personally I feel that the closer the better but have gotten a doe at 500 yards in years gone by.

In reality with the A/R in place I think it is pretty hard to tell if a Buck is legal even if you are confident you can make a killing shot at 300yds! Suppose shooting a Doe at that distance is a different story? Pretty sure I could whack one out to 200yds.

Very good point, since I have a vehicle as blind permit I am not subject to A/R

With proper optics you can identify legal game at almost unbelivable distances,i do understand this is a specialized way of hunting and not for everyone.

Having slung rounds downrange at 300 yards in a controlled setting off the bench I feel confident in my .270 to lethally take game under proper circumstances. Personally I would like to get as close as possible and have taken shots at this range before actually attempting to harvest game at long distance. My .270 is the only rifle that I have shot at this range but hopefully this summer I will have more time to hit the 300 yard range thats approx. an hour drive for me

Most all my deer huntin is in areas where I can see 100 yards max so my guns are usually sighted in for 100 yds. Late Season with snow cover sometimes you can see a lil further but not much. Pic of my stand (below) ive been hunting out of last few years. Pretty thick with most shots under 75 yds.

I shot my fair share none over 75 yards though, just bought a 300 RUM so I am going to try to hunt longer shots

IMO, 600 is about the most realistic range you should shoot a deer at. Sight the gun in for your point blank range. Beyond 600, you will find that it takes a lot longer for the animal to die a humane death. For most of PA, the closer the better, because once that deer shot a 400 yards starts to run, it's whoever gets the last "killing" shot. Anything from .270 up should be able to kill a deer humanely at 600 yards.
