I found that making a shooting cast bullets in not only pistol but in a rifle to be fun and away to shoot low cost bullets. Anyone here casting and shooting thier own bullets. If so in what, what is your source for material, and what have you been paying for lead, gas check etc? MM

I've been casting my own for nearly 30 yrs. I have 7 different moulds for the 45-70. I also cast for muzzleloaders and 50-70, .577 Snider and 43 Spanish. I have a few dozen other moulds.
About twenty years ago I stopped at a "going out of business" sale at a surplus store. The fellow had 15 pound ingots of telephone cable shielding lead, nearly pure. I bought all 70 ingots for $1.00 a piece. Of course, I only have about a dozen ingots left. A friend recently replaced the windows in his old farm house. The counterweights were long lead bars, weighing about ten pounds each. Got about another 300 lbs of lead from those.
For purposes of black powder cartridge loads, I shoot nearly pure lead. The obturation of the bullet helps with accuracy at moderate velocities.
Lubrication is my own mix of shortening, cheese wax and petroleum jelly. I use no gas checks, but load a card wad on top the powder and then a 1/8 inch grease cookie under the bullet.
Depending on the gun, I fire unsized bullets or bullets sized after lubrication.
Some loading is done with the old fashioned Ideal hand held reloading tools.
