Carbon or aluminum. You must twist enough (about 1/4 turn) to break it loose from the foam. The heat generated by the arrow as entering the foam heats the foam enough to cause it to act like a glue and bond to the arrow.
I don't want to use any junk on my arrows either. That's why I just give'm a twist.
Not sure what foam you have if you kan't break'em loose with a twist... I've got two different brand targets, using two totally different material foams. The twist works on both. But again...you have to twist'em far enough to hear it break loose from the grasp of the foam. It'll give a light "snap" sound when it's loose.
This method works with my lightest shooting (Darton) Fireforce up to and including the hardest shooting (Bowtech) Stryker. The Stryker is sometimes a bit of a pain...all there is to grasp is the end of the arrow...from the nock to the fletching!
