Bucky,
For under a $100 its hard to beat an Abu Garcia 5500 or 6500 series. For $200+...a Shimano Calcutta CT400 is top shelf. I own all 3 & mainly use the Calcutta for saltwater. Its built like a sherman tank & can take the salt. For freshwater...the 5500 or 6500 are great reels!

now for me it has to be the spinning reels because i did try bait casters once and after a few weeks in the boat with my pop my biggest critic. he named me king of the birdnesters and i seriously do not think he will ever let me live it down

I have a question. When casting a bait casting reel. I can cast it side arm with no problem. When I attempt to cast it over-hand I get a backlash. I've tried setting it light, heavy and just can't get it right. What do I need to do to correct this problem? I've even tried a heavier lure that didn't work either.

the only trick i know to stop that is lite thumb pressure on the spool as soon as the lure hits the water apply a little more pressure to the spool

SKwirl Thanks. I'll give that a shot. I've tried everything else, even turning the reel sideways to allow the line to exit the reel more smoothly.
