I can see why Penns are around for a looonnngg time! I really beat mine but they keep bouncing back. Key is to rinse down after each saltwater use and then oil where needed.
At end of season I tear down & lube.
One of the few reels today built for a lifetime of use without costing U your lifetime savings!

when I ran my charter business on the Bay, I used Penn 49's exclusively, except for my spinners. They were Shakespear.

Actuallyy I ran two boats, depending on who wanted what. I had my 40'BayBuilt out of Queen Annes, and my 24' Orlando out of Deale. Fished mainly for blues and striper with the big boat and spot and other "sit and wait" fish with the little boat. I even had a 15' runabout that I would charter about two or three times a year to people wanting to go on the Wye River for crabbing. It's not a lucrative as one might think. It's hard work and you have to put a bunch of money back into the boat. I did it as a sideline on weekends to get away from my regular job. Actually it was a BIG tax write-off, more than a money maker. I had a Charter license, a commercial fishing license, and a crabbing license.

I used to launch out of Chesapeake Beach and run across to fish areas just below Sharps Lighthouse...Diamonds & Gooses for striper. Also at Sandy Point hitting Swan & Love point areas. Had a 21' Bayliner Trophy Ctr console but got too expensive after blowin pistons twice & a host of other problems. That 90 gal tank would be a lil salty to fill at $3 a gallon these days! ;D
Im now down to a 16' Lund Jon (mod v) with 25 johnson so cant hit the bigger waters anymore. Flats on North but still enuff to keep me happy. Simple boat with minimal maintenance.
Sounds like you had 2 pretty nice boats there gully!

Been a long time ago though. I don't even know if I could remember all my navigational stuff now. If you ever need a partner to go out of the upper bay, I'm your man. With being on disability, my time is mine and am available almost anytime. I haven't fished the Bay for over25years. Left Baltimore in 82. What licenses do you need now?? Do you fish all in Md below the Conowingo?

I buy a $40 Chesapeake Sport License for boat(lil green sticker on frt of boat) & it covers all aboard. Good deal!! Mostly I fish north of havre degrace on up around Spensors & Roberts Islands in the rock for rockfish(stripers). My boat aint no yacht by a looonnngg shot but it does the job in that area. ;D GBJ & I are going 6/14 & I can take another but believe your headin to hatteras around then. I also plan 6/18&19 and 7/2 & 3. After that i play it by ear pending how much water is being run thru conowingo hyrdr dam turbines. If around & wanna go any of those times...pm me. Would love to have you join. My 16' Lund

Thanks for info flounderpounder. I found this January 2007 news release:
COLUMBIA, SC. Shakespeare Fishing Tackle announced the acquisition of Penn Fishing Tackle Mfg. Co. Founded in 1932, Penn is a market leader in saltwater trolling and spinning reels and saltwater rods.
These products include the famous Penn International®, Senators®, GT, and GTO trolling reels, as well as Slammer® and Spinfisher® SSM and SSG spinning reels.
"For 75 years, Penn products have been the gold standard for offshore, inshore and surf fishing," according to Scott Hogsett, President of Shakespeare. "Shakespeare is excited to be able to add Penn's broad assortment of saltwater products to complement the current Shakespeare, Pflueger and All Star freshwater, inshore and saltwater offerings."
"We look forward to bringing to Penn the vast new product introductions and innovation that our customers have come to expect from Shakespeare and Pflueger each year. The Penn name is one of the greatest brands in fishing, but has lacked the resources to grow and develop markets.
