I think that Penn actually makes one reel in the USA still. Them and Okuma are the only ones I know of that still do. I just found out that Ugly Stik went to China. Sorry to hear of your loss Tater. A man who steals another mans pole would take his woman too.

Loggy, I've enjoyed Penn reels for a long time, and in fact thought it would be a great idea to collect the old ones. Mrs. Berks didn't share my enthusiasm for a shelf full of old reels. I have these four presently: 750SS Spinning Reel for heavy surf fishing 711Z Spinning Reel (left hand) for surf fishing 250 GH Spinning reel 310 HS baitcaster Taterdavid, That is an amazing story. When will these young people understand that they're not immortal or bullet proof.

Nobody ever goes into it hoping to become a drug addict. It just happens. You don't know it's happening, and then one day, you are stealing reels to pay to support yourself. That is usually after you are selling the drug to support yourself. This is not a justification for theft. But try to understand that addicts have a disease. My dad is an alcoholic. It is extremely painful to watch. I would venture to guess that addicts are no longer enjoying their drug of choice. I know that at the end, I hated smoking. But I couldn't quit. 12 weeks and counting. ;D

Yeah, Mrs. Loggy doesnt appreciate the finer things this world has to offer either! ;D I never will forget one time I ordered 5 fishing outfits from cabelas (1 for me & 4 for my fishin buddies I owned a boat with). Those 5 BIG Tubes showed up on the porch & I told her that only one was Loggys but she put me thru the usual interrogation anyway!! LOL, all shipments thereforward were shipped to my Mom's house. Dont like seein the Mrs blood pressure elevate! ;D My Mom now gets cabelas catalogs out the gazoo!!! ...they probably think she is an outfitter or sumpin! ;D Hey, tip for the day: Consider alternate shipping drop points if deemed necessary!! ;D

I've got about 8 Penn 85s that I use for flounder and stripers. They are on either 5-1/2' or 6' Penn Peer Sticks. I've also got a 320 that I use for stripers as well as deep dropping when I go out on head boats. If I keep thinking I'll probably come up with others.

Bob, found this ( bold clip below) on antique fishing reel site. Looks like peen reels may be the best contact for value. www.pennreels.com/I have a 309M (in box) missed on my list! ;D It just has one oil port for spool. Bot new in 1998. I dont believe Penn makes the 109 anymore...now its a 9M. The Penn 49 and 109 were being built in the 1930s, and Penn still makes models with those numbers. In fact, many of their models have been manufactured for over sixty years. The company should be able to provide structural clues for dating their reels, and they stock parts for even their older reels.
As far as values go, most Penns are sold for fishing, rather than as collectibles. You'll find lots of them selling on ebay daily, so check there to see what kinds of prices they bring, while keeping your reel's condition in mind. I can't even guess at a value by the model number alone.
