if you had to choose your deer rifle from the following rounds which would you pick . 30-06, 270, 308,30-30,243 or the 7mm mag .these seem to be the most popular rounds in the woods. which would you pick?

I would and do choose the 308 for heavy timber and brush hunting still-hunting or stalking and the 270 for open field stand hunting.
I have never taken a whitetail with the 270 yet, as most of my hunting these days is in some pretty thick stuff, trying to get at the big boys, or I tag out in archery season.

I've been hunting a long time with an old 270 pump and I have shot a lot of deer with it... All I can say is I love the 270 woods , feild, brush it has done it all for me.. Myself I wouldn't give a bag of Donuts for a 30-30 I think they are one of the most over-rate deer rifles going...Just not enough steam for me.... MM

30-06 for me. Though I have played around with loads that give rapid expansion because of over penetration issues with whitetail deer in PA with standard loads. For the same reason I will respectfully disagree with MM re. 30-30. They seem to have wonderful ballistics for a 50 yrd shot on a whitetail deer. let me add I have never shot a deer with a 30-30. But many of my hunting aquaintances have. Adequate penetration, good expansion and good energy transfer. I even downloaded rounds for a friends son to use in a 30-06 when he first started. I used 30-30 bullets. He shot two deer with that load. Bang-flops. Now when the boy got bigger and tougher he went to full power loads in the 30-06.LOL. Ironically, my dad, who always hunted with a 30-06 with great success. "180 grain round nose are the way to go" (his words not mine) Downsized to a easy handling 30-30 lever Marlin at the end of his hunting days. But MM if you hand me a 30-30 and a 30-06...well I'll go with the 06. I just beleive that the 30-30 seems to be a gun that is still quite "modern" Now were you talking glazed or powdered donuts?

" Now were you talking glazed or powdered donuts? Good one ;D But I prefer a full load of jelly.. ;D If I want a 50 yard shot I'll carry a hand gun.......... Me being disabled I want to shoot a little further and make dang sure they stay down...... For a rifle a 30-30 just doesn't cut it any more.... Why so many around today because of the price. Old man had ten kids bought them all 30-30 whinny........ Old ones had a safety problem with the hammer and that has *Finally been taken care of* .. Just don't like the round period you can down load a 30=06 to 30-30 but you can't load a 30-30 to 30-06 . Buy the kid 06 download them and when they get around to handling it load up... But heck some folks like Long johns instead of Donuts.. ;D That's what makes this world turn.. ;DMM

I have dropped a few deer with an '06, one with a .243 and several with a 30/30. I have never had any run after being hit with the old 30/30 and only 1 got back up. Can't say the same for the '06 but have not lost any of them either. Being kinda off the wall, I mostly use my .300 Win mag now, like the big boom!

i agree with mauser man on the 30-30 most overated gun out there..excuss is always shot placement is the key but when the deer keeps running and the next hunter tags it out is the problem.
ive taken deer with a 243,30-06,270 all worked well for me..
i also own a 300 rem,308 and 7mm-08 that i gotta try out yet on deer,,

I prefer the 308 Win. for deer,But you cant argue with the fact ,that more deer have been taken with the 30-30Win than any other caliber Nuff Said!

I've killed deer with .35 rems,30-06,7mm mag,300 wsm and .308's.I never have and never will be without a .308. I've owned several and they all liked 165 gr Hornady FB interlocks infront of 45 gr of varget.I have no idea how many deer I've killed with that load but I've never had to track a single one.

Most of my rifles are .30 cal- 2 .30-06's, 2 .300 win mag's, .300 savage, .30-30, .308. I prefer the .30-06, the only round I dislike personally is the .270. Case size is so near the .30-06 but you don't get a great deal of variation in the available bullet weights. With the -06 you can load anything from 90gr. accelerators to shoot groundhogs to 220 gr. for bear. The .270 doesn't give you that type of flexibility. The same arguement has been made to me about the .300 win mag vs. the 7mm rem mag, But I own 2 .300's and a 7mm

No such thing as too DEAD...I've toted my 7mm Rem Mag around since the early 70's and wouldn't even think of carrying anything else...and all that nonsense about meat damage is truely nonsense, just use a great bullet and it will come out only a little bigger than it entered... never send a boy to do a man's job !!!!

Not to beat a dead deer(pun intended) But in public land woods I worry about over penetration. I, as perhaps others, have experienced total target focus in the woods. As long as we remember that as the deer falls our bullet isn't going in to a properly constructed backstop in the woods. That being said, I don't have any problems with the caliber preferances. But as a 30-06 boy could smack talk all day long on the caliber.
