SlumpBuster, wooly bugger, or PT nymph. Either one catches fish opening day. I might even mix it up with a pink salmon egg imation.

Kev - Been tying alot of those slumpbusters. Below is the link to Charlies Flybox which has most of the Barr flies which is in his most current book. Just go to the drop down box and select slumpbuster. The material list and tutorial will walk you through tying this fly. BTW John Barr's new book is a winner and well worth the $40 www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox//

Do you know right now or will it be, a morning of the first day decision on what you see for flys ? not fly fishing first day... will probably let, at least, the 1st week pass before i try getting out the fly rod... too many people fishing around here & not enough experience on my part to try it early

Not sure yet, as this is going to be my first fly opening day...if I can stick to my resolution! Leaning toward a bright egg pattern for those aggressive first hour fish...then maybe going to some bead head nymphs...and hoping for some midge or blue wing olive action if the afternoon warms up.

If the water is clear and I can afford to get to Rock Creek, my first fly will be a Parachute Adams in a size 14. The Cutts love it.

When you absolutely, positively need to catch every motherf**kin' trout in that pool.... wooly bugger, accept no substitutions!
