how any people have gone this route in their gun purchases lately. i purchased a few the first a 300 ultra mag in 700 lss Remington. the second a ruger Mk11 all weather in 270 wsm. both great guns, but better for western hunting. my Remington 700 mountain rifle in 280 is better suited for pa. still kicking around the model seven xcr in 7mm-08. anybody else gone the magnum craze to.

I only went as far as getting a Win 70 Supershadow in 300 WSM.
I love the gun, use it currently for bear, hoping to use it on elk or moose someday.

I bought a Browning A-bolt in 300 wsm the first year they came out.For some reason I just had to have one.I loved that gun but ended up selling to a buddy of mine and I bought another 300 wsm in a Kimber Montanna.I still grab my .308 more than anything else for deer but the 300 wsm isn't out of place in the Pa woods. It's light, accurate, comfortable to shoot and I have some leeway to load it down a little or load it hotter. If I were only alowed to have one rifle that would be the one.More gun than is needed?Probably.Too much gun?No way.

It all depends on what you want to do with your rifle...the bullets are basically the same...it's only how fast they travel that differs, problem is that energy in not proportionate..a 200 fps difference ends up being alot in terms of impact energy..since there hain't no such thing as "TOO DEAD" it doesn't really matter....the magnums really start to shine on the long range hunting scene...in the woods...where most deer are killed, it doen't matter much but in the open spaces they are magnificent..how many do I own, just about all of them...my favorite, the 7mm REM MAG and 140 grain Nosler Partitions......

I agree. IMO it seems there are many reasons to get a magnum. Dangerous game(no explanation needed). "Because I have to have one or I won't have a successful hunt." Because I want one. Because the hunt is going to be long range. Etc. I bought a hardly used 300Rum in Remington because I wanted one. Have only used it to play with at the range. I would definitly use it on a western hunt. In PA? Probably only in a rainstorm since it is stainless. There are certainly other reasons to get a magnum. I can think back to a lot of purchases I've made for the wrong reason. The nice thing about reading the posts is it helps me decrease those decisions.

used the 300 rum one time for. hit a big doe at about 200 yards. the bullet went clear thru and never exspaned. very little blood loss but found her fifty yards down the hill. last time i used it for that.

I own a 7mm Rem Mag. This year I bought a Kimber Montana in 7mm-08. Iam tired of losing meat due to hydrostatic shock. Plus the 08 is a fine round. I can use it on anything up to Elk.

USE the nosler partitions or the Barnes X-bullet...the damage is being caused by bullets coming apart...the above two punch right on through like a full metal jacket..they do their job and get out of there....you could also, if you handload tone it down a couple of hundred feet per second..make it just like a 7mm/08 if you'd like...

Frank, Your are right, but its hard to beat 1/2 inch 3 round groups @ 100 yards with Balistic tips! My rifle just loves them. I was thinking about Winchester's new XP3's in 160 grain for it.

I purchased my .300 Win back in 1972 for a Montana elk hunt. I didn't get to try for an elk but did get a bear and a mule deer. After shooting my magnum, I find if I want to make sure of a kill, it is picked up first and the other rifles sit in the gun case. It may be a bit of overkill for deer but I can't fault the results.
