I get alot of pm's on this subject from this forum and some others on the correct method of doing a barrel-break-in....first off let me state that there is no absolute methods but for the most part they are similar... I do alot of competitive shooting at long range with a variety of cartridges and rifles...I treat all my hunting rifles exactly the same as my benchrest quality barrels and actions...I find that if you break them in right from the start you'll save yourself alot of problems later...all righty let's get started..first off, clean the barrel "before" you ever fire a shot...if the factory would not shoot them to test it would make things alot better but for safety's sake I guess they must.... I clean all my rifles with a penetrating oil called "KROIL"..it's available at hardware stores. DO NOT get it in the trigger, it will become sticky when it's cold, if some runs down in the action rinse it out with rubbing alcohol...I then shoot one shot and clean..this time with KROIL, a little tiny bit of JB PASTE and a little bit of Butches Bore Shine...I soak two patches with Kroil and get it lubed up and then two patches with JB and Butches'..short stroke the entire barrel..then run about 3-5 dry patches through it...SHOOT another shot..and repeat..I do this for the first "ten shots"..take all your cleaning stuff to the range and be prepared to spend the entire day..it will be worth it for years to come...for shots 11-20...shoot 2 shots and repeat..once you get to 20 you home scott free...you can then shoot your little heart out, you have far less copper than ever before..I've shot high-pressure loads for 100 shots and never had a fouling problem or any decrease in accuracy..I do the same procedure with big magnums and don't have any problem with them either... GOOD LUCK....try this method..alot of my benchrest buddies use this method also....always keep that barrel with oil in it when your not shooting it...whip it out before the first shot...enjoy your days at the bench... PS...if you can't find KROIL, try BORE TECs ELIMINATOR..another great cleaner...
