I usually start with a very small twister jig deep with slow retreive at first. I know ice fishin sometimes they are layered with 1' off bottom. Example in ice fishin 20' of water there are no crappies in the first 19' of water. As things warm a lil they work higher but very late summer when water warms greatly they seem to be in deeper areas same as winter....not too far off bottom.
Later in season start deep & work up. When you hit them...try a float & adjust acccordingly to depth where they were caught with out a float. Its obviously trial & error but it gets ya in the ballpark.
Of course...if in a boat you can cheat with a good fish finder! ;D

I use a slip bobber with a bobber stopper that way you can set the depth you want
