I know the Last Great Frontier is a ways from these PA waters but im sure some here either have been there or would like to go. Well, I had one trip several years ago to the Last Frontier! Ever since I deeply yearn to go back. You dont have to spend an arm & a leg. I see the Halibut trips are now going for about $200 & I believe I paid $175. There are Super 8's etc where you can stay pretty cheap. I brought back over 70 lbs of delicious halibut fillets which at market more than paid for trip. Least thats what i told Mrs Loggy! ;D ;D
If anyone has any questions on guides, best time to go please post here or PM me. I was working with some local folks there & got some great advice how to plan a trip urself, what guides are good plus how to save some $$.
Here's a report of my Alaskan Halibut Trip several years ago.
I made one trip to Alaska and experienced some outstanding fishing there!
Below are a few pics of the Halibut I caught in Homer, Alaska. Trip was early Sept with cold wind swept rain/sleet , low 40's. Captain's last trip for the season and trip got cut short due to storm pushin 12' seas. By the end of trip only 3 of 8 were still fishing. Rest were seasick. We were using chunk bait and needed 60 oz. of lead to hold. Were out about 35 miles.
Was wearing fully insulated Gortex and still could of used more. I caught one nice 75 LB Halibut and one in the 40 Lb. range. I was lucky in catching the largest fish and 2 out of the 8 boated. And it was luck for sure in such terrible conditions.
Not the best pics due to conditions & thowaway drenched camera. ;D
Had enough halibut fillets for one year. I suggest a July or August trip. As said, this was the last trip Homer Ocean Charters made for the season. These guys know what theyre doin. www.homerocean.com/alaska_fishing.htm
I almost got cut-off on this pic. ;D
Another few at the meat rack.
