Here's a coupla ole pics of my Dad. Dad took me turtle fishin as soon as i could walk. We trapped them mostly from farm ponds etc. where farmers wanted these nasty boys removed. Dad would get ole bloody beef from the local butchers that was ready for the trash. We would set our lines out late evening & head out next morn before daylite. A simple legal turtle hook & large stake in the bank affixed to 50' or so of mason twine... thats it. They usually would be waitin on the bank for ya next morning with hook swallowed & ready to do battle. ;D On a 20 plus pounder Dad always would place a 22 LR HP thru the snappers head to slow them down. Believe me thats about all it did. I will never forget one morn where i was carryin a burlap bag w/ a large snapper in it. Dad said larry...keep that bag away from ur butt when carryin. Well...i didnt listen..i knew better. The ole snapper drilled straight thru the burlap & locked onto my arsecheek.....! The worst xperience i have ever encountered in my entire life! Dad had to extract the snappers head & use anuther knife to prey his jaws apart. I still have a scar that reminds me of this experience & every now & then...a snapper nightmare haunts me. ;D Sure hard to beat fresh snapper soup though!! ;D My Dad "The Turtleman" Who Taught me Everything! Two 30 plus pounders here!!!

The best meat comes from a white meat "loin type" strip up under the shell. The leg meat is tasty but darker. Turtle soupe aka snapper soup is something that many pay BIG Bucks for today in finer restaurants but was a cheap table fare while i was growin-up.

Last year when I redone and old pond and made it larger it seemed to have a few big snapper. Well I used about 2 feet of tie wire with a hook on the end a gallon milk jug for a bobber 50' of rope and went to work. Used chicken for bait and within a week I got ten of them suckers out of there. Some people claim they have 7 different kind of meat in them.. I never got hungary enough to eat the "ugly things". Anyone ever try it? MM

hey loggy i can relate to this story. my grandpa use to crawl along the banks of streams and reach into the holes for snappers. only problem snappers weren't the only thing in there. he would pull a snake , catfish or what ever was home at the time . it never bothered him, have an old picture some where of him if i find it will post it here. good story by tha way.

Pretty funny story there Loggy. I've only ate turtle soup one time and I must say it wasn't too bad. Those turtles can be pesky when your fishin' for cats with cut bait. I end up catchin' a few every year. I won't mess with em,I like my fingers ;D,I just cut the line.

i went bowfishin one time back in 1982 when i lived in N.J. with my hip waders on and came across a snapper....water was bout 26" deep and stuck him with an arrow, the arrows i hunt with to boot with broadheads....well it went straight through the middle of him and pinned it to the bottom of the pond....carried it home by the arrow with it's head away from me....took it home and dropped it into a milk crate head first and it just got wedged in it....4 days later it was still alive!!!....went to go take it back to the pond figuring it deserved to live after having a broadhead shot through it and stuffed in a milk crate fer half a week....as i was walking down the road this black guy just bout locked up his cars brakes and hopped outta the car asking me what i was going to do with it....told him the story and he said "yeah there tuff buggers" well he offered me 25.00 bucks and asked if i could get any more!!!....i said sure bunch of them around....he said i drive this road home everyday at bout 4:30 so if ya get any more just hang out on the road side and i'll buy them all from ya at 25.00 each....well i nade bout 500.00 that summer off this guy and he still wanted all i could get....so they most be good to eat....right now i got 3 of them from eggs i hatch back in august of 2004....they will be 3 this august 17th and are bout 5" long now....had 37 out of 52 hatch and returned 34 back to the pond by my house....let me dig some pictures up post them and the story on them....there bout 3.5" here a year ago...............bob

Neat story & pics bob! There's definitely a market for them. High end seafood joints carry snapper soup.
On the large snappers we would pop a 22 LR thru their head. Take them home & put them in dad's o/s garage for an hour or while settin up butchering stuff. They were still ready for battle until you took their head off. We would burn heads cause even with head off they could clamp down with tremendous force. Could put the hurts to a dog etc that may get at them.

Great post Loggy! That first encounter you had with a snapper is really funny now, but I'm sure you weren't laughing much at the time. I'll bet that's a story that has been told and retold in your family.
And longbeard, the idea of your granddad reaching into holes for snappers gives me chills! I've seen film of southern fellows reaching into holes in muddy, slow moving rivers for huge catfish and that amazes me, but the thought of an unseen, angry old snapper latching onto a finger(s) really raises the hair on your neck!
Great photos Bob. Thanks for sharing.
Delicious snapper soup can be had at the Coventry Pub on Rt. 100, about 2 miles south of Pottstown in Montgomery Co. (About a half hour-45 mins. from Dixon's Muzzleloading Shop)

I was thinking (yeah I do that sometimes) as old as these turtles get how full of contaminates are they? Lead, mercury etc. Heck they tell you a lot of fish not to eat more than one time a month. MM
