I found a load in my Lee manual, for the 308 Winchester, It calls for 50grs.of Hodgens H4831,under a 165gr bullet, this load nearly fills the case,Now I'm no fan of compressed loads, especially when seating a bullet, Has anyone tried this load? were ther any signs of high pressure? such as flattened primers, hard extraction? I'm open to all comments or suggestions.

Myself personally, I think IMR or H4831 would be way-way to slow of a powder for such a small case...and the 165 could be substituted by a premium quality bullet that weighs 150 grains..also it's alot dirtier when shot in such a small capacity case....and I'm not sure you could even make any velocity with a powder that slow to make it worth trying.... Try some IMR 4895...or 4064...they will enable you to make some velocity, burn much cleaner and will give great accuracy...the new 4007 powder just might be able to be used also, I've heard alot of great reports about this new powder... As far as what's the limit with any rifle, there's no real answer...it's all try and see...what's showing no problems in one rifle may be way to much for another...there's a million variables with reloading any cartridge... Get yourself some new cases, fireform them with a reasonable load..and then start to experiment, load 3 shots each and jump up in half grain increments..when you start to see some flattened primers your getting there, but that's not always maximum, when the bolt gets hard to pull up...stop, she's had enough.. I'd start with IMR-4064, a Nosler partition or Barnes X-bullet and a Remington 9 1/2 primer...check out the reloading sites to get some starting loads and see what happens in 1/2 grain increments..make sure you fireform the case before you experiment...both of those bullets will smash anything you'd care to shoot them into...GOOD LUCK, be watchful and hold steady...

I really like42.5grs of IMR 4895 in the 308 with a 150 or a 165gr nosler ballistic tips, it will put the SMACK DOWN on a Whitetail. I found the H4831 load in my old Lee manual. 50gr Min &Max I weighed out 50grs.and poured it into a once fired, neck sized only case, and it filled it to around 1/16" from the end of the case mouth,as I stated earlier,I'm no fan of compressed loads! It scares the crap out of me to seat a bullet knowing that I'm smashing the powder into the case. Don't know if doing this can cause the cartrige to explode, Don't want to kind out! I'm not going to use this load I am just curious! Another powder my 308s like is BL-C2, I haven't tried Varget ,but I will,I like to use Hodgdens powder,I've had great success with their powders, Thanks to all for your advise.

308 Win. 200 primer, 47gr 4064 powder, 150gr spitzer sierra boat-tails. It is a compressed load, but man does it shoot well. I shoot a model 77.

As a Highpower competitor I've reloaded a lot of compressed loads in .223. It is kind of unnerving at first but after after some 7000 rounds I'm kind of used to it. I don't load many .308 but I have loaded 500+/- .260 rounds. I use a lot of Varget and it FWIW it is kind of a dirty powder but in my loads it is very accurate.
