Does anyone own 1 or have you fired one. Seems like it would be a great Pa deer gun

It would kill deer but its more a Bear/Elk gun. I think the smallest factory load is a 180 grain bullet. A buddy of mine owns one in a Ruger Frontier. He uses it for deep timber Elk in Idaho. Great shooter, and hits hard. It is a wildcat 338-08. Hornady and Ruger are going to mass produce a 338-06. I think would be a better Elk/Brown bear gun. I can not recall what they named it. There is also a 300-06 round to. The 338-06 really intriges me. The days of the wildcatters making it big are here I guess. Iam also interested in a .22-243 (.22-308 really) for varmit hunting. It would make good Coyote medicine.

I would venture to say that you could get alot more out of the .338/06...the case difference would be good for 100 or 200 feet per second at least...slower powder and a nice pressure curve would get that big ole slug moving...but when it comes down to it, why not just get the .338 win mag and down load it some, if you ever need that big power just add a couple of grains,... that .22/308, is similar to the .22 Cheatah..real hard on the throat area...it'll burn a barrel out in a hurry..however you will get some amazing velocities if that's what your into...

Frank, Iam just kicking around the idea for a big bore rifle. I would also weight in the .325 WSM I like that round. I like it better then the .338 win mag.

FAST ARROWS..never send a kid to do a man's job....the .338 WM will do anything a Federal will do and far more..those couple of hundred feet add up to be lots and lots of knetic energy..velocity/energy are not proportional as you already know...you can always like I do with mine, cut back on the velocity and save your shoulder.., the .338 WM is a real beast, I wouldn't be afraid to shoot anyting with mine, the 200 grain X-bullet would never stop in any animal I know of..I've shot them right threw telephone poles... the only advantage the FEDERAL and the WSM have is size, weight, action length etc..but neither will ever make the power of the big brother .338WM...
I love to shoot big bore magnums...if you want extra zip and your fillings loosened try the .338UM or the .375UM...now your talking, but for long range hunting, there is no substitute for raw powder.. I do alot of side hill hunting, out ot 1000 yards plus....once the yardage is calculated there's no shooting unless it's done with big big power...the .300UM or .338UM will drop a deer in it's tracks at 1000 yards with no problem..that extra 200fps means alot out there......long range banging-nothing like it!! You''d be surprised at the animals reaction when there is no sound to scare them...even though the power is only a fraction of it's early power the kills are spectacular in some cases..hopefully my son will whack a bear next week at ultra long range..and hopefully it will be filled..I'll post it for sure...

Frank, I can not disagree, but i dont shoot anything on four legs out that far. To me the hunt starts at 100 yards. I can and do shoot at those ranges, but I do that for a living. I like to try and get as close as I can to them when hunting. I have shot up to a .416 rigby. Recoil is not a factory with me. My perfered weapon for 1000 meters plus generats a hella lot more recoil and blast then a .375 RUM. I would love to go shooting with you once. It could be fun!
