how many have there strings changed after each season?
is it best to do so or can you just do it if you see a problem developing with the string on your xbow?
does anyone really know how many shots a string is actually good for?

i dont think there is a magic number of shots or length of time to decide when it is time to change strings.i keep my string well waxed and watch it closely, the string on my xbow has approx 500 shots on it now and still looks fine, although i have replaced the center serving three different times.

A lot depends on the speed of the bow, type of string and serving, how smooth the deck is and even if it's a compound or recurve bow. I reserve the center serving of my 320 and 350 fps bows every 150 shots of so. And change strings every 500 shots and for sure before hunting season starts. While changing strings is easy ( I built my own press) it's a hassle becasue the new string has to be broken in and shortened (by twisting) one or more times until it stops stretching. Each time it's adjusted the point of impact changes a bit requiring resighting.

As the others say...each bow is different.
My Dartons serving look like new and one has in the neighborhood of 450 shots, the Stryker shows a little wear but no broken strings in the serving at less than 200.
The Darton string has very little load on the track so the wear will be less than a crossbow that has a highly loaded string on the track. The Stryker string is fairly highly loaded on the track/guide/deck(!), so I can see it needing at least a reserving in the not to distant future.
As to "when"....easy...! Just keep an eye on it. If the serving starts to frey...have it reserved. If any main strings break anywhere...get a new string. Also check at the attachment points on the cams for broken strings, cables and string.
