I can answer that!! Yes, they are great family companions and bird hunters. The GSP is a medium sized hunting dog used primarily for upland fowl in the US for finding, pointing and retrieving birds. He is a versatile hunter, an all-purpose gun dog capable of high performance in field and water. Their great natural ability makes them highly suitable for the average hunter. As with any breed, before buying a puppy, make sure the parents are of sound temper and proper screening of genetic defects (OFA-hip x-ray) has been done. Also, just because it's a GSP doesn't mean it will hunt, if possible, see the parents in the field. (This applies to any hunting breed) They can be a high energy breed and need regular excercise, their short coat requires only moderate grooming. They are very family oriented and do best when kept indoors and not kenneled.

I had a GSP he was the most hard headed animal I ever had until he reached 2 years old. At that point it was like some one threw a switch. He became a magnificent hunter and companion. unfortunately He was killed by a speeding driver 2 days before his 3rd birthday

Cant go wrong with a WELL BRED FOOT HUNTING shorthair. Been around hunting dogs all my life and thats the breed I settled on after 40 years of being around different breeds. Just my 2 cents.

Stick with the right, responsible, reputable breeder with your personal/family/hunting/interest requirements in mind and foremost to ensure the right match. If you see a $200, $400 or $600+ puppy, chances are very high there is a difference in their degree of pedigree, interest and testing, vetting, socialization, and guarantees. A good breeder interested in where their pups end up will have no problem spending time with you to answer your questions and you should be ready to answer theirs!
In Shorthair shorthand :-)

In Shorthair shorthand :-) Deb Orpen Well said Deb, I might add that there is a common misconception that because a dog is a certain breed, it will automatically perform. This is not true as I have seen many bird dogs from different breeds in the field that could care less about finding birds. Ask to see at least one of the parents HUNT -not point a bird in the yard when on a leash- if it doesn't have a title above a junior hunter (JH). That said, please make sure the parents are at least OFA'd also. As a breeder myself, all my parent dogs are proven in the shows, hunt tests and/or field trials and OFA'd. Parent dogs are chosen for suitability to each other, they must "compliment" one another and MUST have excellent natural ability, and be well tempered. I gaurantee my guys against hereditary defects and none may be resold w/o my consent - if one must be given up for some reason, it must come back to me. They are not sold as kennel dogs, but in house only. My pups are raised in the house with TONS of socialization with other dogs & kids, they're all vet-checked, go for car rides and get individual crate training prior to sale(no, they do not live in crates...just get some time alone in one to help adjust to them!!). Weather permitting, they will also have bird exposure. All are assessed for conformation & tempermant, although both can change a lot as they develop! Buyers close enough are encouraged to come to training sessions (free of charge, cost is birds used only) to get their pup on the right track for whatever venue the buyer wishes to do. All my dogs are also my personal hunting dogs and hunted extensively on grouse, pheasant & woodcock.
