With the heat of summer upon us, we need to be more careful excercising our 4 legged companions. You can work your dog all summer with proper precautions. If you hunt your dog in the fall, it's important to keep it conditioned over the summer. 1. Try not to run in mid-day heat, especially when the humidity is high also. Early AM and evenings are the best. 2. Hydrate you dog well an hour prior to working it, and immediately after. 3. Always carry water with you if none is available where you're running the dog. (ponds, creeks) 4. Keep runs short in heat above 75 degrees. A 20 minute run is plenty. 5. DO NOT wet your dog totally before running, only feet, belly & ears. Water on it's back & body only amplifies the sun & heat, causing it to heat up more, not to keep cooler.
I try not to use open areas when it's 80 or above out, stick to the woods where it's cooler. Remember to never leave your pet in a vehicle in hot weather!!

One more thing, swimming is great excercise in the summer heat & very much enjoyed by many dogs as plainly seen in the "smile" on Dueces face here......he never misses the opportunity to hit a pond on a gameland ;D
