www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/conditions/06/14/lyme.disease.reut/index.htmlPennsylvania's statistics for people getting Lyme Disease is incredible . We now have our vets use the snap test and the increase in Lyme+ German Shorthairs in our program has been noticeable in just the past 18 months. Amazingly only one had any symptoms and he had paraylsis on one side and a head tilt. If 4,287 Pennsylvanians got Lyme Disease in 2006, I expect the figure is much, much higher for dogs. Deb Orpen

Our cocker was diagnosed with Lyme's disease just this past Friday after having the snap test at our vets. No symptoms...just in for a check-up. Had high reading of 91 & will be on Doxycycline 100 mg(3 times a day) for month then be retested. Have had beagles, brittany's, Amer cocker's, etc, for many years & this is the first..

Thanks Ann. She seems as healthy as ever. Our Tibetan Spaniel was tested too & tested negative.
They both had the heartworm tests & whole 9 yards. $$$ouch!!!

I keep my guys on ivermectin year round, no testing then. Have never had any tested for Lymes though.....never were sick, may have them tested now. My sister had Lymes many years ago, she is OK now, antibiotics worked, no negative effects from it.

Unless your vet offers the snap test (now up to five - heartworm plus 4 tick-borne diseases), you will not know. The cost for the snap test should be very marginally more than the heartworm-only test. Getting your vet to offer that test may be more difficult as they have to order a batch.

The Doxycycline 100 mg(3 times a day) seems to make her a lil sleepy. A tick was found by her groomer 2 weeks ago & removed. Maybe where she got Lyme's.
I have find ticks on deer, myself etc for many years and never had a problem. Ticks were from sullivan county mountainous areas & not local area.

I just found a tick on my beagle this morning after our walk, I couldn't believe it! We have her on frontline that we put on her religiously every month, the vet said ticks will still get on a dog, but they will die within 24 hours. gonna have to check her after every walk from now on.

My Lab got Lyme's disease about 3.5yrs ago.One day she was fine and normal, the next day she had a slight limp. The day after that, she could barely use her back legs.On New Year's eve,I found a vet that was open and he prescribed the doxycyline. That worked then a few weeks after that course of treatment, the symptoms returned.I put her on another treatment of the doxycycline and that seemed to clear it up.She's also on glucosomine twice a day. She's doing pretty well now but she has some bad days every now and then.Since then,I retired her from hunting(I haven't duck hunted since). The kicker is,she was due for her annual shots in March, and I always had her get the Lyme's vaccination. Now it's in her system,it will always be in her and it could come back at any time
