Go with the small six, when that I ice gets thick the bigger auger will kill you. Put a shanty over the hole and it won't freeze over and you will be more comfortable.

I have a 6 inch an 8 inch when fishing for small fish (pan fish, pickerel stocked trout) I like to use the 6 inch. But when going for the big trout and Pike I like to use the 8 inchs makes all the difference in the world. I also have a power auger in the 8 inch size for when the ice gets to thick for the hand

I didnt get one this year due to no ice in my area. Sounds like a 6' would do in my lakes around here for crappies, bluegills, perch etc.
