I would like to talk to those how have questions about Camp Security. Too many thieves are taking our property and we need measures to stop or at least slow these crooks down. There are many options and I would like to hear your questions and sugestions.

One thing I used to do at my camp was to always leave the cable down that blocks the entrance to our camp. If your chain or cable is up, you're telling people you're not there. Always worked for us even in a remote area.

The camp i just bought has the ADT system installed in it. The previous owner said he never had any problems with any attempted breakins, ADT signs are posted around the camp. Last November I ordered some propane, and when the guy came we had a good chat. He said one time the previous owner ordered a delivery, and when they came nobody was at the camp. After filling the tank he said he walked up onto the porch and opened the screen door to put the bill between the doors. A state trooper came flying up the driveway before he even had a chance to get back in his truck. Even with the big propane truck, the deliveryman had to show the trooper credentials that he did indeed work for the company. He also had to stay while the trooper checked the cabin and outbuildings. I think it costs about $32.00 a month to keep it activated, and when I move there this spring I will have it on when I expect to be away for any period of time. When away also keep your curtains or shads drawn so they can't see whats inside. I used have a camp in Potter that was very secluded, and found at times there was evidence of attempted breakins. Someone even came and stole my almost brand new push lawnmower right off my porch while I was away for afew hours! Thievies are bold, and no trepassing signs and cables across driveways means nothing to them! But I have to say that after I got to know and make friends of the locals, I never had any problems again. Afew free rounds of beer bought at the local watering holes can make a big difference. Some of these guys will than keep an eye on your place. And don't go up there acting like a flatlander with a big mouth and "running" their women, that's a sure fire way for trouble!

Bearclaw, good advice on getting to know the locals. I'll second the opinion on knowing when to keep your mouth shut. Doesn't hurt to hear what the locals have to say first and slowly build your way into the conversation. Depending on where I am, I'm a local or a visitor. I love to help those who come up to my neck of the woods if I see they are genuine and don't try to argue with me about what I know about MY AREA.
Simple manners will likely reward you in the long run.
