I shot a PSE 70 LB Fireflight (2315 XX75 w/125 Thunderheads approx 215 fps) for years & consider 40-45 yds to be about max for an effective kill considering energy & accuracy.
How does a 4X scoped 175 lb crossbow (340 fps w/100 gr. muzzy)compare?? Are you still within the approx same killing range??
:)Appreciate all your input!

Great question, Loggy. When the compounds were introduced, I retired my recurve and wrapped my arms around a Jennings Model T and immediately became a killing machine, or so I thought. Actually, 30-35 yards was my effective limit. Now, I carry a longbow and keep my shots under 25 yards.
If a crossbow will duplicate that 30-35 yard range then I will be a happy future owner. Pulling the longbow with a protesting arthritic shoulder has me strongly considering adding a crossbow to my archery equipment, and I hope to find one less complicated than the present-day compounds.

I know my 70 LB PSE Fireflight with the 125 grain Thunderheads could crack through both shoulder blades of a deer at 25-30 yds. Sounded like 2 bricks crackin together when hit. Thru lungs...like cuttin butter.
Curious how a crossbow compares.

Like fergie said, it depends on conditions, I have shot buck at 25 yards and also at 50 yards, only because I had a good clear shot. I can't stop saying enough about my tenpoint stealth. ;D ;D

loggy you wont regret getting a crossbow, just what one you do buy will be a tough decision..should be a 30 yard weapon butas you can see 50 is a option for some and possible but not advised.

I'm shooting a Parker Terminator (320 fps) and Excalibur Equinox (350 fps) using 100 gr Slick Tricks. My normal practice routine (at least every other day) is on targets at 20, 30 and 40 yards. Judging by the peneration using 3 Blocks, I have no doubt they both will pass through the lungs of a deer at 40 yards. Out of resppect for the animal, not to mention two bad wings, I've limited my shots to 25 yards. But if a buck of a lifetime comes my way I'm very comfident that I can hit where he lives at 40 or even 50 yards. (The Equinox scope is calibrated for 10 ,20, 30, 40 and 50 yards.)

By the way, type of broadhead makes a big difference in how far you can shoot accurately with a X bow. Missed two buck at around 25 yards with full size 100 gr Thunderheads. I noticed tht the big braodheads tend to plane down, left or right depending how the head is turned. Switched to the smaller 4 bladed Slicks and my accuracy problems are history.

Cossack, thanks for your comments on your experience with your crossbows. As someone at the point of considering adding one to the personal arsenal, your experiences with these two popular crossbows concerning effective ranges and broadhead preference, is certainly a big help. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, rs. I appreciate the information on a crossbow more in line with my wallet. I do want to make the plunge into owning a crossbow, but I wasn't interested in a second mortgage!

Correction
My bad: " (The Equinox scope is calibrated for 10 ,20, 30, 40 and 50 yards.)"
That should have read: the Lumi Zone scope.....
