I would check with an attorney to see if there are any avenues for expunging public medical record due to 10 years passing.

try getting in touch with your elected official who i hope is a republican and maybe they can help you find away around this. depresssion isn't a bad thing many people have this problem and are living a healthy life now. so hang in there and keep looking for a way

If you were hospitalized voluntarily, then no problem. If 302'd(involuntary committement) then there could be. Different state by state. I know NAMI(National Alliance of Mental Illness) is working with the state on a bill. Don't know number of bill. One part of bill is to consider expunging prohibition of gun ownership after set period of time. Some advice to you folk. If you are having mental health issues sign yourself in voluntarily BEFORE involuntarily commited. Also make sure responsible/trusted person safeguards your firearms until you are safe. IMO no MENTAL health situation warrants suicide. "Suicide, a permanent solution to a temporary problem"

the rules don't aply to the long gun , i think. you can't hide a long gun very well. the shame is that it didn't stop that young man at v.tech from getting one but it's stopping you

I think the prohibition to gun ownership after an involuntary mental health commitement applies to "firearms". I work in mental health but that doesn't make me an expert on this issue. www.pafoa.org discusses this in their forums "suicide & PA gun ownership" at length. The advice came back to consulting a lawyer. Why laws aren't more black and white frustrates me. But each situation is different. Hopefully your situation is one that would allow you to legally own a handgun/longgun. I think that FOREVER prohibiting gun ownership is a bad idea for some. For others it makes sense. Some of my clients are very responsible with gun ownership. Others truly scare me when I hear they are going to be in the same PA woods as me. Check out the web site forum. They may actually name lawyers up on the legality of gun ownership.

Were you actually denied, or are you just assuming that you will be? I would think that if you are prohibitted it would be the same for long gun or handgun, since you have to go through PICS either way from a dealer.
Onager: be careful with your wording. In the PA UFA, a "firearm" is a handgun, or a short barrelled rifle or shotgun. Long guns do not count as "firearms", at least as it pertains to the PA LTCF.
OP: If you have not actually been denied, you may try to apply for an LTCF. Or you could just go to a gun shop and try to buy one. It will cost $5 for the PICS, pass or fail. Then you will know for sure.
