Over the years I always seem to have better luck staying with particular motors Mfg 2 cycle oil vs getting a generic brand. That is: Johnson Evinrude XD-30 & Mercury QUICKSILVER Premium Plus TC-W3 for johnson & mercs.
I tried some cheaper generics & even pennsoil, lubramatic makes etc. but much more smokin & carbon.
Whats all your thoughts?

Loggy my advice would be to stick to the XD-30 and the TC-W3 because these are made for boat motors. They have alot more time and study in there oils then the other companys for marine motor use. The high rpms that a boat motor runs is alot different from a car or land use motor. I went to mercruiser school in florida and they realy expressed this issue to the machanics. The oil that is used in your boat motor not only lubs and protechs but it helps the cooling also.

never was much on outboards. but had lots of experience with two stroke's in motorcross. stick with the synthetic oils. less fouling and cleaner burning with less wear on the motor.

I just changed my Quad over to synthetic oil. Artic advised it.. But I don't know about this 1 time a year thing... ? Price whys it is about the same as regular if you figure out how many times that it has to be changed.. Just not sure about the time and wear they say you get.. Guess time will tell.. MM

don't trust the oil in your gear box change it more often. especially if it is driven by a wet clutch.

Not sure if this would apply to your application or not.
I'm an old "motor head" and since I now cut a lot of firewood and have 4 chainsaws I found myself getting interested in high performance chainsaws etc. I did a lot of investigating on this issue and hands down in the "hot" chainsaw world the oil of choice is MX2T made by Mobil. Apparently it was developed over in Europe for the motorcycle racing circuit with great results.
The top chainsaw builders report reduced operating temperatures, increased RPM and virtually no piston wear when running this oil. I've been using it in all of my 2 cycle motors for a couple of years now and they are running fabulously. Does it do all these guys say ? Don't know but if they recommend it for their demanding use it's good enough for my light occasional use and I'm more than satisfied with it.
Just my .02
