My 17 year old son and I are just getting in to hunting. We live very near SGL 43, and I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about the property and could give me a few ideas or pointers as to where to go on 43 for things like Phez, grouse, squirrel, bunnies... I saw on the PGC map of 43 that there are a few food plots there. Would this be a good place to start or are the food plots primarily for deer. Although I did a little phez, squirrel, and bunny, hunting 20-30 years ago, I haven't done any since, and figure I'm a rank beginner and could use some help, especially trying to get my son into hunting. Thanks for any info and help you can offer.

I took a ride to SGL 43 today just to see where it was and what it looked like. I turns out to be only 19 miles away from my place. It has a pretty nice PGC shooting range on it. I didn't walk around the land though because I don't have any hunter orange to wear yet. What I could see from the car was mostly densely wooded areas with a lot of thick tangled woody brush that looked way too thick for me to attempt to walk through. There were some food plots that I could see and some open brushy areas surrounding the food plots. These places looked real birdie to me. I guess I'll have to check them out next year. They no doubt get hit real hard. Maybe I'll run across some other areas that look birdie when I get out there and walk around some more. Orange first, then I'll take that walk. Merry Christmas to all.

Spike, No, my son and I haven't taken the hunter safety course yet. That's next or first on our agenda. Then we will start to gear up and practice at the range over the summer to get ready for next season. After we take the course, when can we get our license ? When do they go on sale or become available for us to purchase ?

You lucky dog I've been stuck here for an eternity Berks county is the furthest I've been able to get out. I too was born and raised in Delaware county. Berks is as far as I've gotten. The more crazy it gets, the farther I want to go. Unfortunately my career field is somewhat specialized and most of the available work is closer to the city. Enjoy, David
