I owned a TC PA Hunter. I used .015 patches w/.490 balls loaded with 2fg. Now ive been shootin 3fg(goex not swiss) in my 50 flinters with good luck. TC makes a nice pan primer which i would consider.
Not sure if cabelas carries black powder? I dont think. You are close to Dixons when ur at cabelas. I would consider Dixons for your needs too. Dixons carry Swiss black powder. In Swiss...go with 2fg...the 3fg Swiss is too hot with patch & ball IMO.

I have shot a lot of deer with a Pa Hunter using .015 patches w/.490 balls over 70 grains of 3F Goex blackpowder. My gun shoots just a tad better w/.495 balls but the .490's are fine for hunting purposes and are more readily available. These guns are accurate but often come with a hard trigger. You may have to take it to a competent gunsmith to have the trigger lightened to about a 3lb. pull. Don't forget a touchhole pick if your primer flask doesn't have one built in, some spare flints, cleaning patches and later on consider a replacement fiberglass ramrod, the wooden ones break easily.

I think the Tc17 stand for .017 correct me if I'm wrong. If that is the case then you are ok. I also use 495 and 490 balls with a .015 patch in my 50 however it natural is a little tighter with the 495 but still shoots well.

Most commercially mfg patches are either .015, .018 or .020. The TC pillow ticking patches I have are .015.
You should be fine & will know for sure at the range.

ugh almost had it ready to fire for today i was really excited. i went to cabelas last night and picked up a powder flask, ball starter, flints and went to buy some black powder and some priming powder. i got to the counter to find out you have to be 21 to buy powder! so i got everything but the powder now..... i have to wait another week for my dad to go to cabelas with me to get powder

Not sure you got the right patches, I think the tc-17's might be cleaning patches. Measure one, if it's 2 1/2 - 3" in diameter it's for cleaning your bore, if it's about 1 1/2" in diameter it's for patching your ball.

I think strausbaugh is correct per a search i just did. tc17 is cleaning not .017.
