After not being on a bike for nearly 50 years, a friend of similar age talked me into doing a bike tour in Ireland. He had done it 10 years earlier with his brother and made it sound like a lot of fun, and not that strenuous.
Well, we were the only Americans in our group of 10, and we were the only non-bikers. Our tour was in the north-western corner of Ireland in County Donegal, the most mountainous part of the country. It rained 4 of our 6 biking days and if it hadn't been for the Guinness and Jameson at the end of each day, I'd never make the 175 miles.
That marked the end of my biking adventures, forever!

truegrit, I would suggest leaving the bikes in the shed. You never see bikers smiling, and they always have their backsides off the seat and that is for good reason. Don't allow the fancy outfits to sway you, the human anatomy was never meant to fit comfortably on a bike seat! Just my opinion-FROM EXPERIENCE-mind you!

berkscoflinter1, Then you never seen the seats on our bikes! We put the big, soft, gel seat covers over the original on our bikes! .........We also swiched the seats on our motorcycle, I swear men designed the seats on all bikes! ;D ;D ;D

truegrit, I carried a gel seat all the way to Ireland, and I bought biking shorts with gel padding along with cute little gloves with padding. It was still the biking tour from he11! I thought there were parts of my body that would never recover from this assault. But, with all the pain, it was a special week! Ireland, even in the rain, is beautiful!

My wife and I were talking about Ireland today, 9/11. We were there six years ago today and happened to stop in a pub for lunch. Then we sat with several Irish folks, in stunned silence, for the rest of the afternoon. We have good friends there and wish we could go back soon, but the value of our dollar against the Euro at this time makes it very difficult.
