i want to learn to use a map and compass more effectively! with the gps and all i thinks its turning into a lost skill. any ideas where i can go to learn this? besides the army, im too old for that. seriously i dont want to do it from books cuz i have a hard time learning from books, im much better at hands on thanks johnny z

i really dont know... maybe check around at like a local fish & game or maybe a local gun shop for someone willing to teach you

Go to the dcnr home page(www.dcnr.state.pa.us). Type orienteering in the search box. Some of the state parks have courses on it.

The Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club is based out of IUP and does things in the Pittsburgh area. Try here. www.cosc.iup.edu/wpoc/ (Not sure how to make the link hot) One more suggestion. You can do a geocache with a map and compass. It's not easy but it is possible. Try doing that and using your GPS to verify your routes until you get good at it. longhunter
