As with any type of hunting and scouting it is very useful to keep a journal of your trips a field. Here's what to note when you find a shed.
- The date when each antler was found.
- Location : Where was it found ? The property and the specific spot, ( example : southern slope of hill ). A gps comes in handy here to mark the spot.
- Whether the shed was fresh or old.
Antler Position
- Were the tines facing up or down ? This is where I like to take a photo of the antler lay just as I found it.
How do I think it fell off ?
Was the deer - walking, feeding, bedding, jumping, or rubbing ?
Colour and smell
Are the antlers white or chocolate or some where in between ? Is there any bark on the antler and does the antler smell of pine for example ?
Label each shed so that you can match it up with your journal entries.
Good luck and happy hunting !
