Do you need to have a sportsman's permit to hunt with a handgun or will my CCW permit suffice?
Thanks!

I have both but I have been told your ccw is fine. I just get them both at the same time because the hunting permit is only 5-6 bucks and then I know I'm covered either way.

The PA law needs to be changed so it is not so full of legalese technical points to catch the unwary. Pa is an open carry state, you only need a CCW or Sportsman permit to (1) carry the gun concealed, or (2) to transport the pistol in your car.
There are some exceptions to the permit law, such as taking a pistol in the car to a target range or to the gun shop for sale, trade or repair.
Generally, one of the permits is needed to legally carry any concealed handgun, even a flintlock. No permit is required to carry the pistol openly, ie exposed for the world to see. But you still run into the transport in a vehicle problem without the permit.
Frankly, possession of a hunting license ought to be sufficient for vehicle transporting and hunting with a handgun.
It is always best to get the CCW which is issued by the Sheriff. The Sportsmen permit requires that the handgun be unloaded during transport and has some limits on possible times to carry and transport.
Also there is a strange interplay between the carry laws under the crimes code, loaded firearm in a vehicle (a game law) and even a separate loaded gun on an ATV law. Should be combined into just one chapter, written in high school english that nearly anyone can understand.

Those activities that require the firearm be carried unloaded are clearly spelled out. No where in the UFA does it say that with a Sportman's Permit the firearm (handgun) must be unloaded during transport while going to or coming from places where you hunt, fish or trap.
ยง 6106. Firearms not to be carried without a license. (a) Offense defined.-- (1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), any person who carries a firearm in any vehicle or any person who carries a firearm concealed on or about his person, except in his place of abode or fixed place of business, without a valid and lawfully issued license under this chapter commits a felony of the third degree. (2) A person who is otherwise eligible to possess a valid license under this chapter but carries a firearm in any vehicle or any person who carries a firearm concealed on or about his person, except in his place of abode or fixed place of business, without a valid and lawfully issued license and has not committed any other criminal violation commits a misdemeanor of the first degree. (b) Exceptions.--The provisions of subsection (a) shall not apply to:
(9) Persons licensed to hunt, take furbearers or fish in this Commonwealth, if such persons are actually hunting, taking furbearers or fishing as permitted by such license, or are going to the places where they desire to hunt, take furbearers or fish or returning from such places. (10) Persons training dogs, if such persons are actually training dogs during the regular training season.
(c) Sportsman's firearm permit.-- (1) Before any exception shall be granted under paragraph (b)(9) or (10) of this section to any person 18 years of age or older licensed to hunt, trap or fish or who has been issued a permit relating to hunting dogs, such person shall, at the time of securing his hunting, furtaking or fishing license or any time after such license has been issued, secure a sportsman's firearm permit from the county treasurer................................
