Makes me jealous. I really like to catch those big flathead catfish! Been fishing for and targeting them exclusively the last month or so. Just a few smallish ones, and a couple pretty good channels to show for it so far.

Buckhunter92, Shawnee is a mess this year. They have a cloudy water problem they can't clear up and the fishing has been very poor.

I just came back from the lower Susky and brought home six 4-5 pounders. Used to fish the Allegheny a lot and could never get those darn flatheads to bite. Got a lot of channels but no flatties. What's the secret??

Gotta fish the eddies near good current. Had a few in the upper twenties this year but no big ones for me so far. The hydro dams are the best spots. And try the mouth of Bull creek in Tarentum.

Try bluegill for big flatheads. I've been fishing the Mon. in the evenings, haven't had any luck with flatheads-yet, but the channels are hitting pretty good where I'm fishing.

I'll second the bluegills. I keep a tub with an aerator and filter buried in the ground full of them all summer long, I refill it up with gills when I run low so I can just load them up and fish at a moments notice. I like using ones big enough so as to avoid most of the nontarget fish like bass, sauger walleye etc. that will usually grab a smaller bait before the flats get to it.
I also really like suckers for bait.
If you are serious about catching flats, ya gotta have patience! I fish with some friends who are happy only if getting bites regularly and dont care what they catch, they use mostly average sized minnows and they catch bass after bass, white bass walleye sauger etc... Maybe a couple smallish cats.... I sit there waiting...and waiting...and waiting some more LOL. But when I get a hit or a fish on, and the pole bends over double, and the drag is singin', everyone goes quiet and all eyes are on the end of my line! (LOL)
You wont catch many flats on liver.

Caught a nice catty in the NB Suskie on a fly rod... it hit a crayfish pattern. Put a big bend in my 8 wgt. I've never caught a catty before. Whatta fight! Whatta catch! It was 20+". I know that's not that big. But on a fly and a fly rod.... it's a big fish!

A buddy of mines kid caught a channel about that size the other night. I believe hes 7. Anyway, the pole doubled over and upon picking it up, you shouldve seen the look on his face!(LOL) He fought it a total of about 3 seconds before looking at his dad with a very funny (to us) look of anguish! He said and I quote... DAD!.....HERE.....I CANT! (LOL)

My brother and nephew were pounding the cats Thursday night down on the Allegheny using chicken livers. I was using night crawlers and was,nt getting any hits then I switched and still could,nt connect it was just one of those nights. We all had a good time and my nephew really liked stroking his uncle what the hay thats what uncles are for right.
