Who makes the flattest shooting, most aerodynamic bullets in 50 cal. Sabot or not. I'm looking for reasonable shots of up to 125 yd. or so,NOT 200 or more. I see deer but they are too far for me and my setup of a MaxiBall and 80 gr of 2F and it's rainbow trajectory. I don't want to hit one and have it run off if I don't happen to hit the spine or neck. Meaning, I don't want a 50 cal. hole in and out of the thing.

Hunter I would say that if you are using the maxy balls and they are shooting well for ya at you comfort yardage that is all you need. I use round balls out of my 50 and 45 and my longest shot with my 50 is 125 and had no problems. That is with a flinter with open sights. If you have an inline that is scoped I would just say have faith in your equipment and go with it maxi shoot well from what I have seen and you should have no trouble. Good Luck bud!

I prefer T/C Aftershocks.

Bearslayer, my comfort range is closer than I'm seeing the deer. That's why I would like to reach out another 50-75yd and still be confident of a clean one shot kill with a well placed shot. A round ball at 125yd? That's awsome! Where did you hit it? Did it run? How far? Did you have snow for tracking? I'm serious, not trying to bust your chops.

Hunter the way I have all my flinters set up is when I am holding on with my open sights what ever I see above my sight window is where I will hit. Example if I am shootind a deer at 100 yards I hold and basicaly splip the deer in half and I will hit the upper shoulder. It is a matter of shooting alot and practice and knowing where your gun shoots. To be onist all the deer I shot so far with my flintlock (12 so far) I never had more than a 30 yard recovery. The slow moving ball out of a flinter is like hiting them with a top of bricks. I primarly always take them in the shoulder but I have taken 3 in the head already at ranges under 50 yards. Like I said bud you should have no problems with maxi balls but I am still stuck with the old round ball because I never had a problem with them. Good Luck with what ever you use and I hope you have great success!

Don't know if this will help
Per Lyman's Black powder handbook, a 50 cal Maxi fired over 80 grains of Goex from a 26 inch barrel, will drop 2.5 inches from line of sight at 50 yds, 6 inches at 75 yards, 9 inches at 100 yds and 19 inches at 125 yds. If sighted for 75 yds, you'll have 3 inches more drop at 100 and 13 inches more at 125. The bullet is still packing a good deal of wallop in ft lbs, just dropping fast.
Some of the new saboted bullets are pointed boat tails of modern design, that can be launched faster and have a better ballistics coefficient. I don't have figures for them for speed and ft lbs or drop, but I'm sure the manufacturers have them posted on their web sites.
They will shoot slightly faster and probably with less trajectory, however, you still won't get anything as flat shooting as a 220 Swift.

I use an old weaver 4x scope with the post reticle. The top of the post is dead on at 50, 1 1/2" group and the cross wire is dead on at 100. 4" group .There is a definate delay until the bullet gets to 100yd. You hear, Boom, ssssssssssssssssssss Whack! I might throw a 3x9 on for regular rifle season just for something different than my 7 mag. or '06

Hunter what type of gun are you shooting? ? That will make a large difference in the bullets you shoot.

It's a CVA Kodiak Magnum inline.1x28" twist 28" bbl. I know Maxiballs shouldn't be ideal for the gun but that's what I have left over from my TC Hawken kit gun which I sold and don't want to spend a lot of $ experimenting. That's why I posted this question here.Real live experience from real live hunters, not doctored up articles in a magazine. My next question (the same)will be for my .45 TC Hawken flinter in which I also use maxi-balls. I'd have kept the 50 but I inherited my Dad's 45 and want to use it for obvious reasons.

If you can find those Panthers, I found them at Gander, they shoot really well @ 100 & 200 yds out of my T/C. They cost $9 per card the shockwave from T/C shoot just as well and are @ $12 a box.
I don't know about a flinter. I have yet to buy one and every time I see a good one at a reasonable price I have something else going on.
