Brace height is the distance as measured from the string to the thinnest part of the back of the grip of the bow, where the web of your palm, thumb joint rest's.
Changing the brace height impacts 2 things in particular.
1) As you asked about, "forgiveness". Decreasing/shortening the brace height results in the arrow staying attached to the string as long as possible during the bows release for your particular bow. The longer the arrow remains attached to the string the greater the possibility of having the arrows flight impacted by any movement or flaws in the shooters release or shooting style. Essentially it's a "time factor". Get the arrow off that string quicker = less opportunity for human error or flaw to impact it's flight....and visa versa.
2) The other factor impacted by brace height is speed. Higher/increased brace height typically results in less speed as a result of the arrow leaving the string sooner so slightly less energy is transferred to the arrow resulting in less speed.
Hope this helps & makes sense.

someone who is new to archery should choose a brace height of 7 inches+. and learn to shoot that bow before they worry about the 300+ fps bows.
