I already know this can get to be a really hot topic. I was on a hunt once with a deceptive outfit in South Central PA. I hear a lot on here about hunting birds on preserves and I am curious. I know the pheasants the pgc puts out are not wild birds. How exciting are the birds on preserves? Im sure some are better than others. What should a guy look for in a preserve, whether for birds or mammals. I want to get into this stuff but know little about it. The one thing I do know is acreage can be deceptive. Total acres does not mean they do not have it subdivided into smaller pens.

I did 1 of those pheasant hunts before. Well the 1 guy brought his dog and the dog was running down the birds and messin them up. Woul, dnt go on point and when he did go to point we could walk up on the pheasants and kick em to get them to fly. The first and only time Ill do that kind of hunt.

Any preserve I've ever been to isn't pens...they put birds out when/prior to you arriving in open fields. Acreage will be different on every preserve. The birds quality depends on the breeder they are purchased from, some preserves raise their own, many buy them. I have had good and bad hunts, just how it goes. twowithone, you got someone with an untrained or little trained dog and they had poor quality birds, this was a bad thing but believe me, they are not all like this!! I guide on one here and can promise you, my dogs do not take birds out & most of the birds fly quite well. You will get some, especially on rainy days when using quail/chukar that may not fly well. It's also possible they "put the birds to sleep" to hard when putting them out, it's a way of placing the birds out so they don't fly away immediately. Don't let this sour your experience....get some recs and try it again at a different place, come on up here & I'll take you on a good hunt!!
