I'm heading to the lower Susky for big channel cats on Mar 13th and again on the 27th. Sure hope it isn't freezing out. I don't mind fishing from a boat in cold weather as long as it's not freezing and there';s no wind. I'll certainly be dressing warm. Anyone else going for cats yet?

I have never gone for catfish. Sounds like fun. What type of gear do you need?

anything works as far as rod and reel, but try a nice stiny bait or some minnows

I'll probably be gettin' out after 'em in early april when the weather is a bit better and everyone else is out for trout.
I like to use medium action rods with about 8 lb test for smaller to average channel cats. Usually use minnows around 3" or so. Also small bluegill live, or larger bluegill, chub sucker etc, cut in chunks.
I also have two medium/heavy rods with 20 lb test for big channels and flatheads. With larger live chubs and suckers 5 to 6" long or medium size bluegills. Usually rigged with sliding sinker on bottom when river fishing.

Well, we split the difference and went on the 20th (yesterday). I didn't get a bite but the other two guys landed three total. One 9.1lb, one 4.3lb, and one 3.8lb. That was the coldest, windiest day on the river I ever spent. We got the abut two hours before they closed the turbine gates on the dam. After they closed them, the water went down and the tide started coming in against the wind. The fish stoped biting and we got froze stiff. Hope to get out again in mid summer when the stripers are there too. Makes for a more varied catch.

Bummer the weather didn't work out gully. Cats won't be in around here until late May/early June, will get after them then.

Do you guys use stinky baits? Like livers and rotted meats?

Ive never had as much luck with "stink baits" as I have with live baitfish, or cut baitfish. I dont even bother with them any more. Can catch fish once in awhile on it, but not regularly or in big numbers... but for me the baitfish like minnows chubs suckers bluegills etc. live, or cut out fishes that stuff no contest.
LIver is imho a bit better than stinkbaits Ive tried (and thru the years Ive tried several), but not as good as the above, so I dont even bother with it these days.

I'm with guru, I would rather use live bait(chubs, big shinners, night crawlers) than stink baits. I'll use fresh chicken liver and sometimes fresh shrimp. I know some guys will lay shrimp out in the sun for a day or two but that's not for me!!!!!
