Who all can remember the *First shot they made at a deer? * And what kind of gun was it?
My first shot was made when I was 12 old and it was with a *Single barrel 12 gauge JC Higgins shot gun.. With the old paper *Pumpkin balls(Not the rifle slug)I don't know how many of you remember them. I was shooting down hill an I swear the shot went off fell short and rolled in the snow until it made about a 6 inch snow ball... When I was a kid money was really short and it seems all the kids started out shooting a single barrel with pumpkin balls and *Praying Pap would get his early and loan you his 30-40 Krag*... High power rifle were far and few between back then... ;D MM

The year was 1967 and the the time was 7:15 am, about 7 or 8 does came walking by and at the end of the small herd was a buck...the distance was about 25 yards...the weapon was a H&R single shot 20 guage shooting real pumpkin balls..NO front bead only a hole...aimed at the front shoulder of the deer and pulled the trigger, he dropped in his tracks when the ball entered his EAR..never moved a muscle.....MY DAD told me nice shot it didn't ruin any meat..never told him I was aiming at the shoulder...he was a 15 inch wide 6 point, still have the rack...got a new rifle for the second year, a 760 gamemaster in 30/06, my dad bought in a local tavern's parking lot for $50.. and killed 9 more bucks in a row from the same tree and most where shot almost in the same spot at about 25 yards..I discovered a funnel and didn't know it...

:)Ah, such memories so precious to me. My first hunt/deer shot is embedded in my memory as if it just occurred Yesterday. Well, it was back in 1963 & I was only 12 years old. I was just thrilled that Dad took me up to Sullivan County Doe hunting. It was just he & I on trip. I didnt go Buck huntin since Dad said I was just a tad too young then & he wanted to break me in on a Doe after Buck Season closed. We hunted SGL 134 in the morning. Dad put me on a stand and he just went over the ridge a piece. I was Junior Hunter but I was within yellin range for sure. About 7:30 I heard Dad's ole 760 06 bark and I almost sh!t my pants! Dad yelled to come over & he had a nice doe. He showed me how to gut a deer. We drug back to his ole Chevy truck & Dad said he would try to drive one to me. We headed back out on the mountain. He set me up on a stand and made a big circle to try to push some deer to me. I was watchin a lil clearing with an ole 35 Rem Pump. One of those old spiralled forend jobs. Open sights of course. My GranPap bot it for me. It was a silent drive by Dad. About 1 hr after he left me I saw 3 Doe sneakin along edge of lil clearing coming out of thick hemlocks. Man did I ever start to get Buck..I mean Doe Fever. I put the ole buckhorn open sight on what I thought was the largest and squeezed off. I thought I saw the deer drop was wasnt sure. I was actually shaking by then. I just sat there & didnt move just as Dad told me to do after the shot. In about 10 minutes I heard Dad yell...was that you Larry that shot? I yelled back yes. Dad came out of hemlocks exactly where my deer was laying. I will never forget that Hug & congrats from my Dad. Dad said, ok, gut it. Well, what an experience but I got the job done. We drug deer to truck & it was a hunt I will always cherish. Sorta ironic, 24 years later in 1987 I was with Dad on his "last hunt" when he killed his last deer. Same mountain but on other side. I killed a doe in the morning this trip & Dad connected late in the day, just opposite our very first deer hunt together. I helped him drag his deer out. A drag i will never forget. Stopping at lil springs to drink, rest, talk. My Dad wasnt feeling good and didnt have the strength he used to have. Dad died that Spring just 4 months later from pancreatic cancer at a young age of 54. Same strain Michael Landon had...no symptoms, no hope. Lost my best friend & huntin buddy but his spirit is with me on every hunting & fishing trip I take. I own Dad's huntin Camp he left me. In my Camp is a pic of my Dad with a 383 lb. Bear he took on same mountain I took my first & Dad took his last deer. His bear was killed in 1963...the first year I hunted but I wasnt on that trip with Dad..lil too young like Dad said. My Dad was a great hunter, sportsman, woodsman, taxidermist & most of all my best friend. I credit the foundation of all my hunting & fishing skills to a loving Dad who took time to teach me the things in this World that are so important.

Great story there Loggy, very touching, thanks for sharing. Just goes to show the importance of taking the next generation out hunting, it's not about the kill, but the memories made that last forever....... My first deer was a doe, got it with my cousin when I was about 14, he used his old 30-30 & let me use his 30-06 since I didn't have a gun of my own back then. I got her at exactly 7:30, I remember checking my watch & just as I looked up, there was a string of 10 or so doe! I couldn't believe my eyes! I picked out the biggest one I had a clear shot on & pulled the trigger, as deer scattered I couldn't pick out the one I shot at, thinking I missed......seemed like forever for Dave to come over (about 5 min) to where I was. We walked over to where the deer were & there she was, right where I shot at her, she had dropped in her tracks! I was SO excited!

Something I have to ask? Why was it all those old single barrels had the *front sight* missing? Was it from shooting all those *Old pumpkin balls or what? Seems when I was a kid every one I saw it was missing...Or was that to adjust for the windage? ;D
I can remember shooting a *pumpkin ball* one cold morning and all I saw was a big streamer or rooster tail coming off it in the cold air... Wonder if anyone ever Chonograph one of them... Must have went about 500 fps... Heh-heh MM
PS I can also remember as a kid cutting a big X across it hoping it would *open up better* Ahh the foolishness of a young boy! ;D

The first deer I shot at was a doe in "1981" with a 30/30 my husband bought for me. We were up in the Tionesta area when 2 does came walking about 50 yards in front of us, he said for me to take the first one and remember to shoot her behind her shoulder, I shot just as he shot his and mine ran about 30 yards before she fell. I was so excited and a bit sad as this was my first ever animal kill, but after having to drag her 1 and 1/2 out of where we were hunting as my husband was dragging his out, the sadness wore off fast.

1985 it was ,i was only 15. linn run state park,i was using my 7600 30-06 remington.a 3 pointer snuck up between me and my uncle and stopped 75 yards away 100pm and looked at me as i raised my gun and aimed for the shoulder shot just above bang down he went ..only went 75 yards i followed the blood trail in the snow seeing the blood as the young buck with long tines bounced off the trees.as me and my uncle sat there getting ready to gut him,2 hunters approached us saying they shot that deer and were tracking it my uncle in my defense said were did you hit it?heres my nephews shot right thru the heart?they looked and looked and seen somme blood on one hoof then got up and walked away,,and this is how it all began...

All of us boys took out the 20gauge with pumpkin balls our first year. Dad wouldn't even let us take a practice shot. After that first year. Dad offered as he did all of us to buy me a shotgun to use for pheasants(remember those mystical birds). I liked pheasant hunting, but what I really wanted was a left handed 30-06. We found a Savage 110E. 20" barrel, redfield scope. The E stands for "economy" Took my first doe with that gun at Black Moshannon state park. Dad was so happy to see his boys enjoy the sport. Like Loggy my Dad is gone. He and I became friends hunting together. If you know what I mean. When my son got his first doe and then his first Buck. I better appreciated what it meant to my Dad to hunt with his sons.
